The Mississippi Rising Summer Conference 2008 will be held June 2-5 in Biloxi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. Additional information will be posted as it is made available.

The Mississippi Department of Education's, Office of Healthy Schools will offer 2 half-day Institutes on June 2nd:

Throughout the conference the Office of Healthy Schools will also offer sessions on various topics from understanding school health data to successful ways to market your school health programs. It is never too early to plan to attend these informative sessions listed below:

  • Physical Education for the Future - With schools implementing The Healthy Students Act in the 08-09 school year there will be a need for activity based instruction in all academic areas. Come and see some ways to take physical education and health education and incorporate them into your class room setting. At this session you will learn that physical education and academics are closely connected.

  • Health In Action – Great Tool for Teaching Health and Physical Education - Beginning in school year 08-09, schools will be expected to implement Senate Bill 2369 – Healthy Student’s Act that calls for 45 minutes of health education, and 150 minutes of activity based instruction for grades K-8. In addition, ½ Carnegie Unit of Physical Education will be required for High School graduation. Come to this session and learn about web-based lesson plans that have been written to help teachers meet these requirements.

  • Proven Ways to Successfully Market Your School Health Programs - Everyone is getting on the Health band wagon, so we need to use this opportunity wisely to bring attention to the quality health initiatives that are being implemented in your school. Come to this session and learn proven ways to highlight your Coordinated School Health programs and to have a positive effect on students, staff and families in your school community.

  • School-Based HIV Prevention Education for Youth in High-Risk Situations! - More than half of the 40,000 annual HIV infections in the United States occur in youth ages 13-24.The majority of these 20,000 infections are occurring in two especially at-risk subgroups: young women of color and young gay and bisexual men. School-based HIV presentation education is a critical opportunity to reach all young people with health-promoting HIV prevention messages, and is especially crucial to these subgroups.

  • Understanding School Health Data - This presentation will provide an overview of the various sources of health data available including school violence, infant mortality and youth obesity.  Results and comparisons from SmartTrack, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and PRIDE will be provided.  If you find yourself needing statistics for writing grants or just wonder how Mississippi compares to other states, you will want to attend.

  • Come Learn About School Health Successes in Mississippi! - Some may say that it can’t be done, but schools all across the state are having success in implementing school health initiatives. Come to this session and hear how it can be done!

  • School Health Assessment With the growing relationship between health and academic performance the School Health index can be used in your schools health promotion activities. In this session you will learn how to use the School Health Index to identify strengths and weaknesses of your schools wellness policy, develop an action plan for improvement and how to involve teachers, parents, students and the community to implement this plan. 

  • Let’s Go Forward with the Mississippi Healthy Students Act! - With the passing of Senate Bill 2369 – the MS Healthy Student’s Act, schools are focusing on ways to incorporate health education, physical education and activity based instruction of students in K-12th grades. Come to this session to get a better understanding of ways to implement this mandated legislation at your school.
