THE MISSISSIPPI CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

The Mississippi Curriculum Framework was published on CD in 2004. Contents are aligned with the American School Counselor Association standards and the MS Code 37-9-79. The Curriculum Framework was designed to provide Mississippi school counselors with guidelines for school counseling services to students, teachers, and parents at local school sites.  Certified school counselors recognized for obtaining “best practices” at the elementary, middle and high school levels produced this collaborative work.

The mission of the Mississippi Curriculum Framework is to establish competencies, objectives, and resources that enable Mississippi school counselors to promote and enhance the learning process of the students in the public schools in Mississippi.  The goal of the program is to enable all students to achieve a measurable success in school and develop into contributing members of our society."

WHAT SCHOOL COUNSELORS SHOULD DO
While comprehensive school counseling programs differ from school to school, the primary emphasis is placed on students’ individual, developmental needs. The school counselor is in a key position to identify the issues that impact on student learning and achievement. The American School Counseling Association suggests that counselors follow national standards that group counseling duties in three major areas:

ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT
Assists students with development of effective learning skills, guides in course selection and academic preparation, assists students in improving study habits and test skills, assists in interpreting cognitive/aptitude/achievement tests, analyzes grade point averages, demonstrates relationship of academics to work/life/community.

PERSONAL/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Encourages student self-awareness, fosters interpersonal communication skills, counsels students who are tardy, absent, and those with discipline problems, encourages general improvement of mental health/well-being, assists school principals with identifying and resolving student needs, problems, assists in crisis prevention/intervention and crisis/loss situations.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Provides opportunities for career awareness, encourages students to explore occupational avenues, assists students in planning for higher educational and training possibilities, assists in the development of employment readiness skills, and provides financial aid and scholarship information.
