1. Does the beverage policy pertain to teachers lounge drink machines?
Beverage policy does not apply to teacher lounge drink machines. This could be limited by the school wellness policy. 50% of Snack items in machines in the teacher's lounge must meet guidelines.
2. On the policy where it states, "10 calories / 8 oz", does that mean that you can only sell 8 oz size drinks or sell a larger drink as long as there is only 10 calories for every 8 oz?
Calorie ratio must be maintained in all drinks. Elementary schools may sell 8 oz. drinks of milk and 100% juice. Middle schools may sell 10 ounce drinks of milk and 100% juice. High Schools may sell 12 ounce containers of milk, 100% juice, light juice and sports drinks. Light juice and sports drinks may have no more than 66 calories/8 ounces. Expanding the ratio of 66 calories/8 ounces to to the larger drinks sets a limit of 82.5 calories/10 ounces and 99 calories/12 ounces for light juice and sports drinks.
3. Is the vending policy posted on the web site the latest and final version of the policy?
The vending policy posted on the OHS and CNP web site is the final version and was approved by the State Board of Education 10/20/06.
4. Why are the Frito Lay Baked Doritos, Nacho Cheese flavor on the approved list and also on the denied list?
The size of the package of the Frito-Lay Baked Doritos on the approved list is 1 3/8 oz. The size of the package of the Frito-Lay Baked Doritos on the Denied list is 1 oz. To meet the criteria for an accepted product include number of calories, % of calories from fat, total fat, saturated fat; the % of weight of the sugar and whether the product contains 5% of the RDV for Fiber, Vit A, Vit C, Calcium, Iron, Vit D, Vit E, thiamine, niacin riboflavin, zinc; and 3 grams of protein. The smaller bag of baked Doritos meets all of the requirements except the 5% of the RDV and protein. Since the larger bag has more chips and therefore more nutrients, it meets all of the criteria including the 3 RDV and protein.
5. Would a product from China be approved for the vending list for schools?
The vending regulations are established by State Board of Education Policy. Federal Regulations include a Buy American clause requiring products to contain at least 51% of the product to be of US origin. The vending regulations DO NOT have a Buy American clause. Therefore, there is no restriction on the country of origin of the products.
