1. What are the requirements for Physical Education?

Mississippi Public School Accountability Standards require physical education to be a part of the basic curriculum of any configuration of grades K-8.  Also, physical education is required to be offered on an elective basis in all high schools. Mississippi code 37-13-134 provides recommendations for the amount of time students should participate in physical education.

2. Should all students be allowed to take physical education?

A quality physical education program should teach age appropriate skills for any student.

3. Is my child required to receive recess?

This is a local policy and there is no state mandate for students to receive recess.  However, there are numerous benefits children receive through participation in physical activity.

4. Where can I find physical education-related activity ideas to use in my teaching?

Visit Health in Action, an online database designed to provide teachers with health and physical education lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the Mississippi Healthy Students Act. Developed by teachers for use by their fellow educators, the activities of the database cover a wide range of topics and teaching methods.
